Some of the most common causes of toothaches are tooth decay, gum disease, or a cracked or broken tooth. Other potential causes include dry mouth, loose fillings, and an impacted wisdom tooth. The treatment for each of these conditions is slightly different, but you can make your toothache from any of these common problems more bearable using the following home remedies.
1) Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Rinse
Apple cider vinegar is an ancient remedy for toothache, and this is because it contains a chemical known as malic acid. The acetic acid in ACV will help to heal the painful tooth and kill any bacteria that may be causing this issue. You can make a paste by mixing it with baking soda and rubbing it gently on your aching tooth. You can also use it to make a rinse by mixing it with water and rinsing your mouth out with it. The best thing is that this doesn’t sting and it tastes good too.
2) Clove Oil
Clove oil is another ancient remedy for toothache. The best way to use clove oil is to put a few drops directly on the tooth itself, and another way is to rub it into any gums that are in pain because of the toothache. You can also mix it with coconut oil and rub it gently onto the affected area of your gums; this will help kill bacteria and relieve your pain.
3) Peppermint Essential Oil
Peppermint oil is very effective when it comes to tooth pain, and it has antiseptic and antimicrobial properties. You can use it in a homemade paste by mixing it with baking soda, or you can just put several drops on the tooth itself. Performing both of these steps will help kill bacteria and reduce the pain.
4) Salt Water Rinse
The saltwater rinse is one of the most popular home remedies for toothache because saltwater alleviates the pain as well as softens any hard deposits that could be causing the issue. You can use either table salt or sea salt, or you can even use both. Mix the salt with warm water and then rinse your mouth out with it several times a day. Warm water alone can also be used as a home remedy for toothache. Just run it through your mouth several times until the pain is gone.
5) Baking Soda
Baking soda is an excellent natural remedy for dental cavities and gingivitis. Use a container with a small opening and pour 5 ml ACV into it; then top it off with water. Drink this mixture 3 times a day to soothe painful teeth. Mix in some fresh lemon juice for a powerful combo. If your are looking for a natural remedy for toothache, this one will work wonders.
6) Cucumber
Many people have found that mashed cucumber works as an effective treatment for sore gums. Slice the peeled cucumber into small pieces and soak it in warm water overnight to soften it. After it softens, place your teeth in the solution for at least 30 minutes per day for a few days. This will help relieve pain from inflamed gums and reduce swelling. It’s very important to protect your teeth while using this remedy, especially if you have dentures. See our guide on taking care of your dentures using denture care baths.
7) Ice Pack
Apply an ice pack to the sore area of your mouth for up to 15 minutes at a time, for up to five days, until you feel better. You can make an ice pack by wrapping some plastic wrap around some ice cubes in a plastic bag. Once you’ve used them up, put them in the freezer and get the next set ready. This will give you enough time for the pain to go away.
8) Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is a perfect remedy for toothaches. Aching teeth can be relieved by rubbing the affected area with coconut oil until the pain subsides. To reduce swelling and pain, apply a little coconut oil to the affected tooth or gum tissues at night. This can be used alone or with another treatment.
9) Aspirin
Crush up two aspirins and mix them with about a teaspoon of warm water, then use this mixture to rinse your mouth out twice daily until you feel better. I have tried this myself for a few days to see if it would work, and it did help a little bit. It didn’t completely heal my tooth, but there was some improvement.
10) Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is a great way to relieve dental pain and swelling. It has anti-inflammatory properties that can help to reduce pain. You can also use aloe vera on the affected tooth for relief from the pain. Just squeeze out some gel from an aloe vera leaf and gently rub it over the affected tooth. This can be used alone or with another treatment. You will need to cleanse the mouth, massage it, dab on the mixture in your hand and rub it onto your gums until it feels better. Make sure there are no other causes like gum disease or old injuries before assuming that this one is the one that is causing the problem.
